 ‘One Million People Have Spoken’: Petition Triggers Formal Review Of EU–Israel Trade Deal

The campaign calling on the EU to suspend its association agreement with Israel reached one million signatures in under three months

A European Citizens’ Initiative calling for the full suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement surpassed one million signatures, just three months after its mid-January launch, organizers from the European Left Alliance announced on 14 April.

“One million people have spoken: the EU must fully suspend its Association Agreement with Israel – the EU must stand for international law and stop its complicity with Israel’s genocide,” the organizers said in their statement.

The petition demands the full suspension of the agreement over “violations of international law and human rights,” as well as Israel’s “genocide, occupation, and apartheid.”

The campaign, popularly dubbed “Justice for Palestine,” reached the required threshold across 10 EU member states, exceeding the minimum of seven needed under EU rules.

It is the fastest initiative to hit the one-million mark since the mechanism was introduced, and has cleared the threshold required for the European Commission to formally consider the proposal.
