❗️FIFA chief says Iran will ‘for sure’ play in 2026 World Cup
FIFA president Gianni Infantino said on Wednesday that Iran would “for sure” take part in the 2026 World Cup, despite the war in West Asia.
“Iran is coming for sure. We hope that by then the situation will be a peaceful situation. That would definitely help,” Infantino told an economic conference hosted by CNBC.
“But Iran has to come, they represent their people, they have qualified, the players want to play,” he said, referring to the team’s matches scheduled in the US in June.
Infantino made similar remarks in March when he attended a friendly match between Iran and Costa Rica in Antalya, Turkiye, despite earlier comments from US President Donald Trump suggesting Iranian players might not be “safe” in the US.
Iran, which secured its place in the tournament by dominating the Asian qualifiers in March last year, is set to play all three of its Group G matches in the US.
