Trump Planning To Invade Iran’s Kharg Island: Report
US officials say an invasion of the island would aim to pressure Tehran into reopening the Strait of Hormuz
US President Donald Trump is considering ordering a “takeover” of Iran’s Kharg Island in order to pressure the Islamic Republic into reopening the Strait of Hormuz, according to a 20 March report by Axios.
The island processes around 90 percent of Iranian oil exports. Trump ordered strikes on the island last week and claimed all military facilities on it were “obliterated.”
Yet the risky occupation of Kharg Island could put US troops within direct range of Iranian strikes.
“We need about a month to weaken the Iranians more with strikes, take the island and then get them by the balls and use it for negotiations,” one informed source told Axios. Washington recently claimed it has decimated Iran’s launch capabilities, but Iranian forces continue to launch several missile attacks per day.
The Pentagon has reportedly been mulling sending more troops to the region. According to Newsmax, the US is accelerating the deployment of about 8,000 Marines to the region.
