US Ambassador to Turkiye and Special Envoy to Syria Tom Barrack will replace Mark Savaya as Washington’s special envoy for Iraq, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein said on Sunday. Speaking to Kurdistan24, Hussein stated that “Mark Savaya is no longer Trump’s envoy for Iraq affairs, and Thomas Barrack is now managing the Iraq file in his place,” amid growing rumors that Savaya had been dismissed.

Three Iraqi government officials in Baghdad also confirmed the shift to Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, saying the US has tasked Barrack with communicating with Iraqi officials for the time being. The sources indicated Savaya is no longer serving in the role following speculation last week about his removal.

Washington has not issued an official statement on Savaya’s future, but reports suggest Barrack has already been handling communications between Baghdad and the US over the past several days as the rumors intensified.
