⭕️ Oxford Union vote: Israel seen as greater regional threat than Iran
The Oxford Union voted 265–113 in favor of the motion that Israel poses a greater threat to Middle Eastern stability than Iran, after a heated debate on 13 November.
Speakers backing the motion, including former Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh and former Iranian minister Ata’ollah Mohajerani, argued that Israel’s actions in Gaza, historic military interventions, and nuclear arsenal pull global powers into conflict and undermine regional stability. They described Israel as an expansionist state whose policies have caused immense civilian suffering, with one speaker stressing that “international law has been rendered meaningless” in Gaza.
Opponents, including UN Watch’s Hillel Neuer and former British ambassador Dominick Chilcott, countered that Iran’s so-called ‘proxy network,’ repression of minorities, and nuclear ambitions pose the deeper danger, with Neuer claiming Iran has destabilized states from Syria to Yemen.
The debate saw sharp reactions from the chamber, particularly after Neuer remarked that Gaza could have been “prosperous beachfront property,” prompting visible protest.
Students later described the discussion as highly charged, with many calling for more nuance and respect given the gravity of the topic.
