 ❗️UN chief proposes new peacekeeping options for Lebanon after UNIFIL mandate ends

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Monday that an international peacekeeping presence would still be required in Lebanon after the current mission’s mandate ends at the close of the year.

In August 2025, the UN Security Council decided to end UNIFIL’s mandate on 31 December 2026 while also requesting that Guterres submit proposals by 1 June on maintaining a UN presence in Lebanon.

According to a report submitted to the UNSC and reviewed by AFP on Monday, Guterres outlined three potential scenarios involving between nearly 2,000 and over 5,500 UN personnel tasked with overseeing the ceasefire and assisting the Lebanese army.

“Under all proposed options, a uniformed UN presence working to facilitate de-escalation, dialogue, liaison and coordination, and support for the Lebanese Armed Forces, would be necessary … towards the overarching objective of a long-term solution to the conflict,” the report says.
