Israel’s extremist National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir on Monday announced a major expansion of his controversial gun licensing scheme, making another 100,000 illegal Israeli settlers eligible for private firearm permits.
Ben Gvir’s office said five additional towns, Kiryat Gat, Kiryat Malakhi, Gan Yavne, Megiddo, and Tel Mond, were added to the list of communities where residents can apply for firearm licenses.
The policy, introduced after the start of Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza in late 2023, has already resulted in well over 230,000 new licenses being issued.
The move will embolden settlers, who have long used weapons to attack Palestinian communities and seize land in the occupied West Bank, to escalate against Palestinians.
