 Washington Reschedules Lebanese Army Chief’s Visit To ‘Present’ Hezbollah Disarmament Plans

Washington cancelled the army chief’s November visit after Lebanon’s military condemned Israel’s attacks and occupation

Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) Commander Rudolphe Haikal is set to visit Washington in early February, months after his first visit was cancelled due to a statement condemning Israeli attacks and occupation in Lebanon, according to several media reports on 19 January.

“Discussions will include a detailed presentation with figures, documents, and maps of the work carried out during the first phase south of the Litani,” sources told Al-Araby al-Jadeed.

“The presentation will also outline the next phases, starting with northern Litani, as well as operations conducted by the army to seize weapons, dismantle military facilities and tunnels, and other efforts … including in Palestinian camps, along the Syrian border, and in combating drugs, smuggling, and related issues,” the sources added.

The LAF will reportedly present “the obstacles that have affected – and continue to affect – the implementation of the [disarmament] plan, particularly those related to ongoing Israeli attacks on Lebanese territory and the occupation of parts of southern Lebanon, as well as challenges linked to the military institution itself and its limited capabilities.”

Lebanese news outlet MTV reported that the army chief will present detailed military maps to US officials, as well as a list of Hezbollah tunnels and military sites.
