 US War On Iran Risks Sparking Global Recession: IMF

Energy disruption, inflation surge, and financial strain deepen as global growth outlook is slashed

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) warned on 14 April in its latest World Economic Outlook (WEO) that the US-Israeli war on Iran has sharply disrupted global growth, damaged energy flows, and raised the risk of a broader economic downturn.

The IMF said the war has “abruptly darkened” the global outlook, cutting its growth forecast to 3.1 percent from 3.4 percent prior to the late February assault on Iran.

Chief economist Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas warned that prolonged disruption, especially around the Strait of Hormuz, could trigger “an energy crisis on an unprecedented scale.”

The Strait, a key artery for global oil and gas, has become the central theater of the war, with fighting directly disrupting one of the world’s most critical energy corridors.

The IMF said damage to infrastructure and disruption to traffic through the waterway have already hit supply chains and driven energy prices sharply higher, with oil rising above $100 per barrel and natural gas prices also climbing, pushing global inflation projections up to 4.4 percent.
