US Schedules ICBM Launch Following Trump Order To Renew Nuclear Weapon Testing

Russia and the US are stepping up testing of intercontinental ballistic missiles

The US military has scheduled its first test of a nuclear-capable, but unarmed, intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) following US President Donald Trump’s order to the renew nuclear testing last week, Newsweek reported on 3 November.

Citing navigational warnings, Marco Langbroek of the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands told Newsweek that a test launch of the Minuteman III ICBM will take place between Wednesday and Thursday of this week.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright later clarified that the tests will not include actual nuclear detonations. The tests will involve all other parts of a nuclear weapon to ensure they can trigger a nuclear explosion.

The test missile will be launched from the Vandenberg Space Force Base in California to the Ronald Reagan Ballistic Missile Defense Test Site on Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands in the Pacific Ocean.

On 29 October, President Trump ordered the Department of War to resume nuclear weapons testing, claiming that “other countries” are carrying out nuclear tests, such as Russia, China, North Korea, and Pakistan.
