 US Officials Confirm Plan For ‘Trump Economic Zone’ In South Lebanon

Pro-Israel senator Lindsey Graham and other US officials held talks with Lebanese leaders in Beirut, calling on the resistance to surrender its weapons

US and Lebanese officials met on 26 August to discuss efforts to disarm Hezbollah, with Washington doubling down on its demands for the resistance to surrender its weapons and conforming to plans for an “economic zone” in south Lebanon.

Pro-Israel senator Lindsey Graham and US envoys Tom Barrack and Morgan Ortagus led the US delegation that visited Lebanon.

Graham and the other US officials met with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun in the Presidential Palace in Baabda on Tuesday, and are set to hold talks with Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri.

Graham urged Beirut to make “hard decisions quickly” and warned that Hezbollah’s armed presence is a “wall to growth and integration into the region,” the senator told This is Beirut in an interview after the meeting.

“This is a very pluralistic society. One thing you have going for you is that Christianity is able to thrive here, worship freely, do business, and live in peace – something that is not true in much of the Middle East. My advice to you is to keep that diversity and try to find a way to get Hezbollah disarmed, because if you can’t achieve that, then a lot of doors stay locked. But the day that Hezbollah is disarmed, and the Lebanese military is the protector of the country for all Lebanese, then many doors could open,” he added.
