UN Watchdog Says Iran ‘sharply Increased’ Stockpile Of Near Weapons-Grade Uranium
IAEA inspectors have reportedly carried out ‘daily inspections’ of Iran’s nuclear facilities, as officials indicate the agency is facing pressure from Israel’s close European allies
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) says Iran has significantly increased its stockpile of near weapons-grade uranium since its last report in November, according to documents reviewed by AP.
Tehran’s 60 percent enriched uranium stockpile has reportedly surged by 92.5 kilograms (203.9 pounds), reaching 274.8 kilograms (605.8 pounds) as of 8 February.
“The significantly increased production and accumulation of high enriched uranium by Iran, the only non-nuclear-weapon State to produce such nuclear material, is of serious concern,” the UN nuclear watchdog says in its confidential report.
“We are in contact with the [IAEA] and are under its supervision. The agency’s inspectors also conduct their inspections daily according to the existing schedule,” the head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), Mohammad Eslami, told reporters on the sidelines of a cabinet meeting on 26 February.
Eslami added that the E3 nations – Germany, France, and the UK – have increased their pressure on the IAEA to censure Iran. “We hope that the agency will respect the rights of all nations in accordance with its charter and refrain from politicizing the relevant issue,” Eslami added.
