 UAE Demands Special Access To US Dollars Amid Threats To Trade Oil In Yuan: Report

Emirati officials say Trump has ‘entangled’ their country in a destructive war with Iran that is causing a financial crisis

The UAE is in talks with the White House to gain special access to US dollars through currency swaps in the event the US-Israeli war on Iran plunges the Gulf monarchy into a deeper financial crisis, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on 19 April.

US officials reported that Khaled Mohamed Balama, the UAE Central Bank Governor, held meetings with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Federal Reserve representatives in Washington, DC, last week to discuss the possibility of establishing a currency-swap line.

Emirati officials reportedly told the US side that if the UAE experiences a dollar shortage, it may be forced to use Chinese yuan or other foreign currencies for oil sales and other transactions.

“In that scenario is an implicit threat to the US dollar,” the WSJ stated, highlighting that prolonged war “could inflict major damage on [the UAE] economy and its position as a global financial hub, depleting its foreign reserves and scaring away investors who once saw it as a stable and secure place for their money.”

The UAE, a close ally of the US and Israel, has assisted the war effort against Iran.
