Turkish Government Seizes Tele1 Broadcaster, Arrests Editor-In-Chief

Ankara has been using various lawfare tactics to crack down on critical media, opposition leaders, and elected administrations

Turkish authorities arrested TELE1 editor-in-chief Merdan Yanardag and placed the media broadcaster under state control as part of an “espionage” probe that also targets jailed Istanbul mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said on 27 October.

CPJ’s Turkiye representative Ozgur Ogret described TELE1 as one of the few remaining critical broadcasters in Turkiye and called the move “a tremendous blow to the country’s press freedom record,” urging Ankara to release Yanardag and return control of the outlet to its executives.

CPJ said its email to the Istanbul prosecutor’s office received no reply.

Yanardag was detained on 24 October and formally arrested three days later pending trial. A government-appointed trustee immediately halted TELE1’s broadcasts and shut down its YouTube channel, which hosted more than 76,000 videos and over a million subscribers.

The Istanbul prosecutor’s office accused Yanardag of “election manipulation” alongside a government informant but offered no further comment.
