Turkish Court Accuses Jailed Opposition Leader Of ‘political Espionage’
Turkiye’s opposition says Istanbul mayor Ekrem Imamoglu has been jailed to prevent him challenging President Erdogan in upcoming elections
A Turkish court has issued an arrest order for Istanbul mayor and opposition leader Ekrem Imamoglu on suspicion of “political espionage.”
Imamoglu, a leading member of the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), is currently in jail awaiting trial on separate corruption charges.
Mass protests in support of Imamoglu erupted across the country when he was first jailed in March, prompting a police crackdown and arrests of opposition politicians and activists.
Anadolu Agency reported on 27 October that Turkish authorities are investigating Imamoglu for allegedly attempting to gain an advantage in the 2019 mayoral elections by accessing and analyzing voter data with the support of foreign intelligence services.
Imamoglu won the elections, defeating a candidate from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s Justice and Development Party (AKP).
