 Trump left more than 100 people aboard a plane meant to draw an Iranian attack

Donald Trump secretly switched aircraft while leaving the NATO summit in Turkey on 8 July. According to a US official cited by The Wall Street Journal, Israeli intelligence had warned Washington that Iran could target Air Force One with shoulder-fired surface-to-air missiles.

Trump boarded one of the older presidential Boeing 747s in full view of cameras. Minutes later, he left in an airport catering truck and transferred to a smaller C-32A military jet. The Boeing continued to Britain with more than 100 aides, officials and journalists on board. Reporters and some White House staff believed Trump was still with them. The press pool was told to keep the window shades closed. Those on board were not informed about the alleged threat.

When both planes landed, Trump was transferred back to the Boeing before cameras recorded him descending from it, preserving the cover story.

The White House maintained the cover story for more than a month. On 11 August, Trump confirmed the switch, saying he had followed instructions from the Secret Service and the military. He also claimed the smaller aircraft carrying him had faced even greater danger.

“It appears the idea was we can reduce the danger to President Trump by offering up 100 or so people to be killed by the Iranians in his place,” stated ex-CIA intelligence officer Steven Cash
