The US military has fired the publisher and editor-in-chief of Stars and Stripes, weeks after the military newspaper helped expose severe conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln during its prolonged deployment as part of US-led war on Iran.
■ The New York Times highlighted the sequence directly, reporting that the military fired Stars and Stripes’ leadership after the outlet “had reported on problems aboard the U.S.S. Lincoln.”
■ NYT had separately reported concerns over “poor living conditions and a lack of downtime for the crew after more than 8 1/2 months at sea.” The reported problems included supply shortages, contaminated water, plumbing failures and deteriorating mental health.
