Tensions Remain Along Pakistan–afghanistan Border After Days Of Deadly Clashes

Mediation from Saudi Arabia and Qatar put a stop to the clashes that began after Islamabad reportedly targeted TTP militants in Kabul and Paktika

The borders between Pakistan and Afghanistan remained closed for a second day on 13 October, following days of deadly clashes that left dozens killed on both sides.

Saudi and Qatari mediation put an end to the fighting over the weekend, with Islamabad saying its forces killed over 200 Taliban fighters. Kabul reports killing about 58 Pakistani soldiers since the hostilities started last week.

Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said, “The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan complied by halting the war,” but warned that “if these attacks continue, Afghanistan reserves the right to defend its territory.

Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari said Islamabad remained “committed to defending its national interests and territorial integrity,” accusing fighters “supported by India” of launching attacks from Afghan soil, an allegation that Kabul has rejected.

The clashes followed explosions in the Afghan cities of Kabul and Paktika that the Taliban blamed on Pakistan.
