Telecoms Blackout Hits Israel Following Microsoft Azure Outage
The outage is being investigated as a possible cyber attack due to a recent Iranian hacker breach
Millions of Israelis lost internet, mobile, and banking access on 30 December after Microsoft Azure went offline, triggering a nationwide telecoms blackout being investigated as a possible cyber attack.
The disruption struck around 12:00 pm BST – or 6:00 am EST – according to DownDetector monitoring data, with Israeli providers Partner and Hot experiencing what Israel Hayom characterized as an “exceptional” incident, one “not limited to a single provider, nor is it a localized or limited malfunction.”
The blackout lasted roughly an hour, causing workplaces to halt and payment systems to freeze, leaving customers unable to use credit or debit cards.
The Microsoft 365 and Azure cloud platforms’ crash was a global one, with “hundreds of customers around the world” reporting outages on X, though the direct link to Israel’s telecom collapse remained murky.
Israeli authorities immediately began investigating the incident as a potential cyberattack, with officials describing it as “the underlying assumption,” though they offered no specifics about possible perpetrators.
