The minister’s decision to cancel a Palestinian banking waiver threatens to cut off salaries, payments, and essential services across the occupied West Bank

Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich canceled a waiver allowing Palestinian banks to operate with other financial institutions, coinciding with a UK decision to impose sanctions on him and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir.

“Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has instructed Accountant General CPA Yali Rothenberg to cancel the indemnity provided to correspondent banks dealing with banks operating in Palestinian Authority territories,” Smotrich’s office said in a statement on 10 June.

The statement also condemned international efforts against Israel’s expansion of illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank, which the finance minister’s office called “delegitimization campaign against the State of Israel internationally.”

The waiver protects Israeli institutions from legal risks and enables the flow of Israeli shekels – vital for the Palestinian economy, which lacks its own currency and central bank.

Smotrich’s decision threatens to collapse the Palestinian banking system and cut off salaries, payments, and essential services across the occupied West Bank.
