Moscow rejects Israeli and US calls for regime change, warning any strike on Iran’s leader would destabilize West Asia and beyond

The Kremlin warned on 20 June that any attempt by the US or Israel to assassinate Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei would unleash dangerous consequences across West Asia and beyond, calling the push for regime change “unacceptable”.

“They will open the Pandora’s box,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Sky News, referring to threats from Tel Aviv and Washington that Khamenei could be a potential military target, and cautioning against deeper involvement in the ongoing war.

Peskov said Russia would react “very negatively” to the killing of Khamenei, stressing that such an act would not lead to collapse but rather fuel extremist sentiment inside Iran and entrench more hardline leadership. “Those who are speaking about this should keep it in mind,” he added.

“The situation is extremely tense and dangerous not only for the region, but for the whole world. The expansion of the participants in the conflict is potentially even more dangerous,” Peskov said. “It will only lead to another round of confrontation and escalation of tensions.”

The remarks followed a statement by Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz, who said on Thursday that Israel’s war aims included eliminating Iran’s nuclear and missile capabilities, adding that “such a man [Khamenei] can no longer be allowed to exist.”
