Rubio Stresses ‘Urgency’ Of Disarming Iraqi Resistance In Call With Sudani
Iraq’s Coordination Framework coalition is drafting a response to the statements made by the US secretary of state
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a phone call with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani on 21 October, stressing the “urgency” of disarming the country’s Iran-linked resistance factions.
“The Secretary highlighted the urgency in disarming Iran-backed militias that undermine Iraq’s sovereignty, threaten the lives and businesses of Americans and Iraqis, and pilfer Iraqi resources for Iran,” said a readout from the US State Department.
Rubio also praised Sudani on the recent resumption of Kurdish oil exports to Turkiye – which Washington had long pushed for, likely in a bid to offset the flow of Iranian oil.
Kurdish oil exports to Turkiye were halted more than two years ago after an international court in Paris ruled – in favor of Baghdad – that they violated an oil pipeline agreement between the Iraqi and Turkish governments dating back to the 1970s.
Last month, Sudani announced a “historic deal” between Baghdad and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) for the resumption of the Kurdish oil exports.
