 Putin Vows To Support Syria’s De Facto Government, Calls For ‘Practical Cooperation’

Putin’s message to self-appointed President Ahmad al-Sharaa comes weeks after Syrian government forces massacred thousands of Alawites in a sectarian rampage

Russian President Vladimir Putin has sent a message to Syrian transitional President Ahmad al-Sharaa, offering “support” to help achieve stability in Syria and calling for “practical cooperation” between the two countries, Moscow announced on 20 March.

“Putin sent a letter to Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa, expressing his support for efforts to quickly stabilize the situation in the country in the interests of ensuring its sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

“Russia affirmed its continued readiness to develop practical cooperation with the Syrian leadership across the full range of issues on the bilateral agenda, in order to strengthen traditionally friendly Russian–Syrian relations,” Peskov added.

Putin had spoken to Sharaa on the phone in mid-February, offering his nation’s support in safeguarding Syria’s “sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

Moscow supported former president Bashar al-Assad and his administration against Turkish, western, and Gulf-backed extremist groups during the 14-year war against Syria.
