 Palestinian Factions In Lebanon Deny Disarming After ‘Theatrical’ Handover

The factions said in a joint statement that they will not give up their weapons as long as Palestine remains occupied

Palestinian factions in Lebanon issued a joint statement late on 21 August rejecting disarmament, hours after elements of the Fatah party handed over weapons to the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF).

The joint statement said the handover of some weapons in the Burj al-Barajneh camp in Beirut’s southern suburb does not mark an official disarmament of Palestinian factions in Lebanon.

“What occurred was merely internal organizational arrangements specific to Fatah, and not reflective of any broader action concerning Palestinian weapons within the camps. All reports suggesting intentions to hand over weapons from within those camps – particularly Burj al-Barajneh – are completely false and have no bearing on reality,” the statement said.

The statement affirmed the factions’ “refusal to surrender weapons as long as the Israeli occupation of Palestinian lands continues,” emphasizing that “these arms would only be used in the context of resisting the Zionist enemy until the Palestinian people’s rights to return, freedom, and independence are realized.”
