 New Biomarker Links Brain Waste Clearance to Vascular Dementia

A study has identified a biomarker called DTI-ALPS that links glymphatic system dysfunction to cognitive decline in vascular dementia.

By analyzing MRI scans and cognitive tests from over 3,750 participants, researchers found that lower DTI-ALPS scores correlate with worse executive function, highlighting glymphatic impairment’s role in the disease.

The study revealed a potential pathway where impaired waste clearance leads to free water accumulation in the brain’s white matter, causing tissue damage and cognitive issues.

These findings were independently validated across diverse cohorts, adding robustness to the results.

The study underscores the glymphatic system’s significance in brain health and suggests potential interventions, such as improving sleep quality and exercise, to enhance waste clearance.

The biomarker could also help develop treatments for vascular dementia and provide insights into Alzheimer’s disease.
