 Israel Created Fake 3D Videos Of ‘Hamas Tunnels’ To Justify Attacks On Gaza Hospitals: Report

The Israeli army used 3D images from video games, online assets, content creators, and even the Scottish Maritime Museum

A new investigation reveals that the Israeli military used fabricated 3D models allegedly depicting underground Hamas tunnels and headquarters to justify bombing or attacking civilian targets in Gaza, including the Al-Shifa hospital.

The investigation, published on 8 October, was carried out by journalists from +972 Magazine and Local Call in Israel, as well as the research collective Viewfinder, the Swiss network SRF, and the Scottish outlet The Ferret.

The journalists and researchers “analyzed 43 animations produced by the Israeli army since 7 October and found that many contain serious spatial inaccuracies or prefabricated assets – sourced not from classified intelligence but rather from commercial libraries, content creators, and cultural institutions.”

The journalists also interviewed Israeli soldiers involved in the production of these videos. They said that “animators routinely embellish in order to emphasize a supposed threat.”

In one prominent case in October 2023, three weeks after the start of the war, the Israeli army released an animated 3D video claiming to show underground tunnels, bunkers, and a command room built by Hamas under the Al-Shifa Hospital, Gaza’s largest.
