Iran Says New Cooperation Treaty With Russia ‘not A Military Alliance’
The bilateral deal covers not only defense but finance, energy, and trade
A strategic cooperation agreement set to be signed between Russia and Iran will not include a clause on mutual defense, Russian media cited an Iranian official as saying on 16 January.
The official noted that this agreement differs from those signed between Russia, Belarus, and North Korea.
“The nature of this agreement is different. They (Belarus and North Korea) established partnership relations (with Moscow) in a number of areas that we did not particularly touch upon. Our country’s independence and security, as well as self-reliance, are extremely important. We are not interested in joining any bloc,” Iranian envoy to Moscow Kazem Jalali was cited as saying by TASS news agency.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said a day earlier that the agreement was designed to bolster bilateral ties, including defense, but does not include the establishment of a military alliance.
“Indeed, this is a comprehensive, all-embracing agreement. It covers all aspects of bilateral relations, with special focus made on economic matters and trade … The agreement includes cooperation in the area of security and defense but doesn’t set a goal of establishing a military alliance,” he said.
