‘Iran Is The Main Challenge In The Region’: Macron Sets Sight On Tehran’s Nuclear Program

The French president’s warning came days after reports that the US is discussing potential attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities

French President Emmanuel Macron stated on 6 January that Iran’s nuclear program has exceeded the acceptable threshold, referring to Tehran as a “main challenge” for the region, France, and Europe.

“Iran is the main strategic and security challenge for France, the Europeans, the entire region and much beyond. The acceleration of its nuclear program is leading us to the brink of rupture,” the president said in a speech during the annual meeting of French ambassadors.

Macron went on to say leaders must “ask themselves” about the potential need to launch a sanctions mechanism against the Islamic Republic before October 2025.

The French president’s comments come days after reports surfaced that the outgoing government of US President Joe Biden recently discussed plans for a preemptive strike against the Iranian nuclear program.

White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan presented Biden with options for an attack on Iranian nuclear facilities in the event that Tehran moves to build a nuclear weapon before 20 January, according to sources cited by Axios last week. According to the report, the discussions took place around one month ago.
