 India, UAE Agree On Framework To Deepen Defense, Energy Ties

The agreements were signed during the Indian premier’s visit to Abu Dhabi as the UAE moves to expand oil exports beyond Hormuz

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed (MbZ) signed several agreements in Abu Dhabi on 15 May covering defense, energy, and strategic petroleum cooperation to deepen ties amid shifting geopolitics.

The agreements were announced during Modi’s visit to the UAE, the first stop of his multi-nation tour that will also include Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands, and Italy.

UAE state media said the two leaders assessed the state of bilateral cooperation under the India–UAE Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, which has been operational since 2022.

They discussed a number of regional developments, including maritime navigation, energy supplies, and the wider economic impact of the US-Israeli war on Iran, and the subsequent “double-blockade.”

The Indian Foreign Ministry said the new defense framework includes cooperation in “innovation and advanced technology, training, exercises, maritime security, cyber defense, secure communications, and information exchange.”
