Haaretz: IDF Investigating If Commander Demolished Nonfunctioning Hospital In Gaza Without Authorization
After videos showing the explosion of Gaza’s Turkish Hospital circulated online, the IDF said in an official statement that the strike targeted ‘terrorists.’ Haaretz has learned that the IDF was actually surprised by the decision to demolish the building – and has launched an investigation..
According to military protocol, the destruction of buildings designated as “sensitive” in the Gaza Strip – such as hospitals and universities – requires approval from the head of the Southern Command or the Chief of Staff. However, 252nd Division, Brig. Gen. Yehuda Vach allegedly unilaterally downgraded the building’s classification as sensitive, thereby circumventing the need for high-level approval. The IDF confirmed the details to Haaretz and said that “the incident is being examined.”
