ย Disease Risk Rises In Gaza As Israeli Siege Continues, Health Minister Warns
Last month, Israel further reduced the flow of aid into Gaza, allowing only a fraction of agreed deliveries, worsening an already severe humanitarian crisis
Palestinian Health Minister Majed Abu Ramadan warned on 3 April that deteriorating environmental conditions in Gaza are driving a sharp rise in disease risks, as rodent infestations spread across areas devastated by the Israeli siege.
Abu Ramadan said the accumulation of rubble, debris, and untreated waste has created what he described as a โfertile environmentโ for rats and mice, increasing the likelihood of disease transmission through bites, as well as exposure to urine, droppings, and parasites such as fleas and ticks.
He cautioned that illnesses, including hantavirus, leptospirosis, salmonella, tularemia, and even plague, could spread more easily under these conditions.
The minister stressed that the situation is especially dangerous for more than one million people now living in tents or exposed shelters, noting the fragile conditions are heightening exposure to infection, particularly among children.
