 Deadly Clashes Renew Between Syrian Army, SDF Near Eastern Aleppo

The fighting in the countryside at the Tishreen Dam follows the Syrian army’s attack on Kurdish neighborhoods in Aleppo city

Clashes between the Syrian army and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in eastern Aleppo led to the killing of one soldier and the injury of others, state media SANA reported on 9 October.

The Media and Communications Directorate at the Syrian Ministry of Defense claimed SDF forces initiated the fighting by targeting army positions near the Tishreen Dam, which has been the site of intermittent fighting between the two sides since Syria’s self-appointed President Ahmad al-Sharaa took power in Damascus in December.

Turkish-backed factions known as the Syrian National Army (SNA) have battled US-backed SDF forces in the region on Sharaa’s behalf.

The Ministry of Defense also claimed that SDF forces have violated a ceasefire between the two sides more than 10 times in the last 48 hours by targeting army positions along the Aleppo front lines.

In contrast, the SDF issued a statement claiming that militants affiliated with Damascus had begun the attack and that SDF fighters were exercising their “legitimate right to self-defense.”
