 Ahmad Al-Sharaa Reportedly Heading To Moscow To Discuss Russian Bases, Demand Assad Handover

Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa, formerly Abu Mohammad al-Julani, will reportedly visit Moscow on Wednesday to hold talks on Russia’s continued military presence in Syria, according to Syria TV and a source familiar with the matter to Reuters. Discussions are expected to focus on the future of Russia’s naval base in Tartous and its air base in Hmeimim, as well as cooperation over port and airport use to transport aid into Syria.

According to a Syrian source, Sharaa will also formally request that Russia hand over ousted Syrian president Bashar al-Assad. Since the fall of Assad’s government in December 2024, Moscow has maintained diplomatic channels with the new Syrian authorities.
