Afghan, Pakistani Delegations Begin Peace Talks In Doha

Tensions stay high as Kabul and Islamabad accuse each other of ceasefire violations that have caused dozens of deaths on their shared border

Afghanistan and Pakistan opened peace talks in Doha on 18 October after extending a 48-hour ceasefire to cover the duration of negotiations, officials from both sides confirmed.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the Kabul delegation, led by Defense Minister Mullah Mohammad Yaqoob, arrived in Doha “as promised” to begin discussions with Pakistani representatives.

Pakistan’s Foreign Office said its team would focus on “immediate measures to end cross-border terrorism against Pakistan emanating from Afghanistan and restore peace and stability along the Pak-Afghan border.

The two-day truce was renewed following a week of heavy clashes that killed dozens and wounded hundreds, with contradictory reports on casualties.

The burst of fighting marked the fiercest clashes between the neighbors since the Taliban took control of Kabul in 2021.
