Tsurkov was abducted in 2023 by an Iraqi resistance faction in Baghdad after she entered the country illegally, claiming to be conducting research for a prominent US university

Israeli-Russian researcher and intelligence agent Elizabeth Tsurkov, who is being held hostage by an Iraqi resistance group, is alive, and the Iraqi prime minister is working on her release, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein told US news outlet Axios on 23 January.

Tsurkov is a former Israeli soldier who became well known for her reporting and commentary during the US-led war against Syria launched in 2011. Tsurkov enjoyed personal connections with senior members of Al-Qaeda-affiliated armed groups seeking to overthrow the Syrian government.

She entered Iraq on a Russian passport, according to high-ranking Iraqi security sources, and primarily visited the Kurdistan region of Iraq before moving on to Baghdad.

She was first rumored to have disappeared in the southern Iraqi city of Basra. However, information obtained by The Cradle indicates that “she was kidnapped from a house in the Karrada neighborhood of Baghdad on 26 March 2023.”
