Iraqi Resistance Faction Surrenders Arms To Baghdad Amid Pmu Disarmament Push
Several Shia resistance groups have criticized the move and dismissed allegations that it was supported by Iraq’s Supreme Religious Authority
The Iraqi Presidency on 2 June welcomed Asaib Ahl al-Haq’s statement that it plans to incorporate its weapons into the Iraqi state and will disassociate from the Popular Mobilization Units (PMU).
Iraqi President Nizar Amidi said in a statement that he welcomes the “positions and steps taken by the Coordination Framework (CF) meeting to consolidate state authority and strengthen its sovereignty.”
He also affirmed his support for Asaib Ahl al-Haq’s decision on “restricting weapons to the state,” adding: “This step is consistent with the provisions of the constitution and the law and enhances security and stability in the country.”
Asaib Ahl al-Haq, a major Iraqi resistance group, declared earlier on Tuesday that it would place its weapons under the control of Baghdad, and that it had formed a committee to oversee the move.
“The committee will be responsible for completing all requirements and procedures necessary to implement this decision, including conducting a full inventory of personnel, weapons, vehicles, equipment, logistical assets, and all forms of affiliation with the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, in a manner consistent with the requirements of the state and its security institutions,” the group said.
