Israel Orders Displacement Of All Lebanese Citizens Below Litani River

Israeli troops are demanding the forced displacement of around 200,000 Lebanese citizens, after uprooting tens of thousands in the last few days alone

The Israeli military released a statement on 4 March issuing forced displacement orders for the entire area south of the Litani River in southern Lebanon, marking a major escalation of the ground incursion launched a day earlier.

The Israeli army’s Arabic spokesman Avichay Adraee threatened all residents of south Lebanon to “immediately move north of the Litani River.”

“Any home used by Hezbollah for military purposes may be subject to targeting,” the military spokesman added.

Israel said a day earlier that it began a ground maneuver in the south, describing it as a “forward defense” measure. Tel Aviv issued a call for its forces to occupy additional areas, while Hezbollah announced the targeting of several Merkava tanks.

The Israeli army is now expected to continue pushing upward toward the Litani River, which it has been aiming to turn into a buffer zone for years.

During the October 2024 ground invasion, Israeli troops were not able to significantly hold ground or occupy any towns due to fierce resistance from Hezbollah. They only briefly reached one part of the river a day ahead of the ceasefire, before pulling back and occupying several areas deeper south following the cessation of Hezbollah military activities.

The area below the river is home to around 200,000 Lebanese citizens.
