ย VIDEO | Controversy erupts after new X feature allegedly lists DHS account as based in Tel Aviv
When X (formerly Twitter) launched its โAbout This Accountโ feature showing where accounts are based, videos and screenshots circulated online, claiming the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) account was based in Tel Aviv, Israel.
Xโs product lead, Nikita โฏBier, responded to users by calling the reports โfake newsโ, claiming that the location data was incorrect for a โvery small subset of old accounts,โ attributing the error to changing IP ranges, and corrected the account to show โUnited States.โ
However, the sudden appearance of such a high-profile government account in a foreign location raises questions about the reliability of the feature and the transparency of account management.
While no evidence so far confirms any physical presence outside the US, the incident highlights how easily location data can be misrepresented, or manipulated, on digital platforms, leaving the public to weigh official reassurances against unexplained anomalies.
