Syria Granted Temporary Suspension Of Caesar Act Following Trump, Sharaa Meeting
The former Al-Qaeda leader-turned-president also met with the chief of the IMF during his landmark visit to Washington
Former Al-Qaeda chief and self-appointed Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa visited Washington on 10 November, where he held talks with US President Donald Trump at the White House and met with top International Monetary Fund (IMF) officials.
During the trip, the Syrian president secured a new extension for the suspension of US Caesar Act sanctions issued earlier this year, while formally entering his country into Washington’s ‘anti-ISIS’ coalition in Syria.
This was the first visit of a Syrian head of state to Washington since the country gained independence from France in 1946, and marks a major turning point in Syrian–US relations following the 14-year, US-backed war to oust former president Bashar al-Assad.
Sharaa’s landmark trip to Washington focused on several issues, including investment opportunities in Syria, “so that Syria is no longer looked at as a security threat,” Sharaa told Fox News after the meeting. “It is now looked at as a geopolitical ally. And it’s a place where the United States can have great investments, especially extracting gas,” he added.
“It is clear through the policies of Mr. Trump that he is in favor of the stability of Syria and the territorial unity, and the lifting, the complete lifting of sanctions on Syria. So, he is pushing in that direction,” Sharaa, once known as Abu Mohammad al-Julani, told the Washington Post after his meeting in the White House.
