❗️Netherlands to ban imports from Israeli settlements

The Netherlands is moving ahead with a plan to ban imports from Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, citing violations of international law and threats to the two-state solution. The proposed legislation, which will require coordination with the European Union, targets goods produced in Israeli settlements but stops short of broader sanctions on Israel itself. Dutch officials said the move aims to ensure that the country’s trade does not contribute to sustaining illegal occupation practices.

The initiative comes as European governments face growing pressure to respond to Israel’s ongoing settlement expansion and the worsening situation in Gaza and the West Bank. While settlement exports to the EU represent only a small fraction of Israel’s overall trade, the Dutch government views the measure as an important political signal supporting international law and Palestinian rights.

The law is still in its early stages, with legal and procedural hurdles expected as trade policy largely falls under EU jurisdiction. The Netherlands has also launched a review of Israel’s trade privileges under its EU association agreement, arguing that Israel’s conduct may breach human rights obligations. If approved, the ban would mark one of the strongest European responses yet to Israeli settlement activity.
