⭕️ Washington seeks UN approval to lift sanctions on Syrian president ahead of White House visit

The United States has submitted a draft resolution to the UN Security Council calling for the removal of sanctions on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa and Interior Minister Anas Khattab.

The move comes ahead of Sharaa’s scheduled visit to meet US President Donald Trump at the White House on Monday.

The proposal would lift long-standing UN restrictions on both officials, including travel bans and asset freezes first imposed under counterterrorism listings tied to Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). The council has already granted Sharaa several temporary travel exemptions this year, making the visit likely even if the resolution is not adopted before Monday.

Washington has pushed for months to ease measures on Damascus, marking a sharp shift in US policy since Trump announced in May that his administration would lift unilateral sanctions on Syria. UN monitors reported in July that HTS, once al-Qaeda’s affiliate in Syria, no longer maintains active ties with the group.
