Modi Pours Water On Trump Meeting During ASEAN Summit Following New US Sanctions On Russian Oil
Reports say the new US sanctions on top Russian oil firms could send India into ‘energy shock’
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that he will attend the upcoming ASEAN summit virtually, putting to bed speculation of a potential meeting with US President Donald Trump.
“Had a warm conversation with my dear friend, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim of Malaysia. Congratulated him on Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship and conveyed best wishes for the success of upcoming Summits. Look forward to joining the ASEAN-India Summit virtually, and to further deepening of the ASEAN-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership,” Modi said in a social media post on 23 October.
Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim confirmed that Modi informed him that he would attend the summit virtually due to the Deepavali celebrations in India.
India Today noted that “Modi’s decision to attend the ASEAN summit virtually means he is unlikely to have another opportunity to meet Donald Trump this year.” Trump had said in September that he was looking forward to meeting Modi in the “coming weeks.”
The ASEAN summit is due to begin on Friday in the Malaysian capital. Modi has been a regular at the bloc’s annual meeting.
