Annie Altman Isn’t Your Picture-Perfect Victim – She’s Been A Sex Worker, Eccentric, And Doesn’t Fit Society’s Mold.
But her allegations against her brother, Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, should demand our attention as he gains power in AI and government.
Annie Altman was born in 1994 to Jerry Altman (front middle) and Connie Altman (front left). Her oldest sibling is @ sama (back right), born in 1985. She also has two other older brothers – Max (back middle) and Jack (back left).
The Allegations
In a lawsuit filed in January, Annie alleges that Sam sexually abused her throughout her childhood starting from the age of 3 (Sam was 12).
These memories, she says, were repressed until 2020, when she went no-contact with her family.
Annie alleges that in 1997, when she was just 3 years old, Sam forced her to “touch his penis and perform oral penetration on him.”
Between 1997 to 1999, Annie alleges that Sam’s acts of sexual abuse progressed from touching his penis and performing oral penetration on him several times a week to “digital penetration of her vagina and anus,” and also at times Sam would “forcibly perform oral sex on her.”
Annie alleges that starting in 1999-20, Sam would regularly penetrate her “with his penis both vaginally and anally” and that these acts of “rape, sexual assault, sexual abuse, molestation, sodomy, and battery” would continue for the next 8-9 years, up until Sam was an adult.
Sam’s Response
On January 7, Sam Altman, along with his siblings and mother, denied all allegations made by his sister in a lawsuit:
“All of these claims are utterly untrue. The situation causes immense pain to our entire family.”
More About Annie
She graduated from Tufts University, initially planning to go to med school. But instead she shifted gears, diving into yoga, writing, comedy, and art – choices her father supported, but her physician mother and siblings dismissed as a “phase.”
Annie was a self-described “daddy’s girl,” sharing a deep bond with her father, Jerry, who supported Annie’s decision to pursue creative passions over a traditional career.
After her father’s sudden death in 2018, Annie discovered that Sam and her family withheld the will from her for over a year.
By 2019, she faced severe financial hardship, health issues, and housing instability. With no family support, she turned to sex work to survive.
Over the last 5 years, Annie has battled to overcome chronic health issues while facing financial hardship and isolation.
In March of 2024, she wrote: “I survived sickness because of survival sex work. Escorting: I’m not at all glad that it happened; I am grateful.”
Final Word
It’s easy to dismiss these allegations because it’s inconvenient – Sam Altman is one of the most powerful people in the world; Annie is the “crazy” sister, a sex worker with a messy story.
But the most inconvenient stories are often the most important to tell.
