As UNIFIL prepares for the final expiration of its mandate a year from now, Tel Aviv is escalating attacks on Lebanon and has made US-backed threats to launch a new war

The UN has begun the largest reduction of its peacekeeping force in south Lebanon, the UNIFIL, as a result of recent budget cuts and the decision to renew its mandate for only one more year.

The number of UNIFIL forces in Lebanon is being cut down by a quarter, spokesperson Candace Arbil told Russian newspaper Izvestia.

“As a result of budget cuts within the UN system, UNIFIL, has begun the process of reducing its personnel by approximately a quarter. We have already begun this process, and it is expected to be completed by early 2026,” Arbil said.

According to the UN, UNIFIL had 9,900 troops in Lebanon by 20 November this year. Previously, its strength stood at 10,500 personnel.

“Over the past year, peacekeepers have not observed any military activity by Hezbollah or other non-state actors in our area of operations between the Litani River and the Blue Line. We have not recorded the restoration of unauthorized military infrastructure or the reintroduction of unauthorized weapons,” the spokesperson went on to say.
