The president said the future of Moscow’s bases in Syria is unclear and depends on the actions of the new Syrian leadership

Russian President Vladimir Putin said during a news conference on 19 December that the recent events in Syria do not constitute a defeat for Moscow, confirming that he is soon planning to meet with deposed Syrian president Bashar al-Assad, who was granted asylum in Russia after Damascus fell.

He also said the future of Moscow’s military bases in Syria depends on the actions of the new leadership in post-Assad Syria.

“Russia intervened militarily in Syria to prevent the emergence of a terrorist entity there,” Putin said, adding that Moscow “achieved its goals in Syria and [it does] not consider what happened there a defeat for [it].”

The Russian military intervened in Syria in 2015, helping Syrian troops and their allies further turn the tide against ISIS, Al-Qaeda, and other groups who had seized large swathes of the country. Western media has framed the fall of Damascus as a large blow to both Russia and Iran.

“I haven’t yet seen president Assad since his arrival in Moscow but I plan to, I will definitely speak with him,” Putin went on to tell a US journalist. He added that he plans to ask Assad about the fate of Austin Tice, a US journalist who has been missing in Syria since 2012, one year after the start of the US-backed war against the country.
