The opposition has slammed the Israeli government’s new commission as an attempt to ‘evade responsibility’

The Israeli government announced on 17 November a decision to establish its own investigation into the failures leading to Operation Al-Aqsa Flood.

The move has been slammed by the Israeli opposition, which has long demanded a traditional state commission of inquiry into the 7 October operation.

A government statement on the decision framed the probe as “independent,” but clarified that the commission’s mandate will be determined by ministers of the Israeli cabinet. Tel Aviv also said it would do its utmost to ensure the commission’s makeup received “as broad public approval as possible.”

It added that the commission will have “full investigative authority,” the scope of which has not been publicly disclosed.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will establish a special ministerial panel to define the commission’s mandate, including the topics and timeframes to be investigated.
