❗️Washington pulls 5,000 troops from Germany after Merz says Iran ‘humiliated’ US
The Pentagon announced on 2 May that the US will withdraw around 5,000 troops from Germany within six to 12 months, as tensions escalate between Washington and its European allies over the war on Iran.
The move follows remarks by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who said the US had been “humiliated” by Iran’s leadership, prompting a sharp response from US officials, who described Berlin’s comments as “inappropriate and unhelpful.”
The withdrawal, which includes a brigade combat team and the cancellation of a planned long-range deployment, comes as President Donald Trump widens his criticism to other NATO members.
Trump threatened Italy and Spain with similar troop pullouts, accusing them of failing to support efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, while both governments pushed back—Madrid opposing the war outright and Rome rejecting claims it had withheld support.
