❗️US immigration agency is mining WhatsApp metadata to map contacts for undercover probes
In a recently unsealed warrant, the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) revealed how its Homeland Security Investigations unit infiltrated a suspect’s WhatsApp account and used metadata from the platform to identify her contacts in a fake-ID operation.
According to the report, the operation did not require access to message content but leveraged the account’s contact list and communication patterns, marking one of the clearer examples yet of law-enforcement using encrypted chat apps for surveillance.
Privacy advocates warn the precedent could expand far beyond the original case, highlighting concerns about access to sensitive user data, even when messages remain encrypted end-to-end.
