❗️US holding Palestinian activist in ICE custody, family and legal team say her health and whereabouts remain unknown
Leqaa Kordia, a 33-year-old Palestinian resident of Paterson, New Jersey, remains in ICE custody after a serious medical emergency at the Prairieland Detention Center in Texas. Her family and legal team say they have received no information about her current condition or the hospital where she was taken. Witnesses report that Kordia suffered a fall, hit her head, and had a seizure on 6 February, but ICE has refused to provide updates despite repeated inquiries.
Kordia, a longtime US resident, was detained over a year ago after attending a routine ICE meeting, more than 1,500 miles from her home, following her participation in a peaceful 2024 Columbia University protest calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. Lawyers note that an immigration judge twice ordered her release, but ICE has blocked it using “automatic stays,” a mechanism that allows the agency to override court orders without judicial review.
Advocates warn that Kordia’s case is part of a broader crackdown on pro-Palestine voices in the US, echoing the recent detention of political commentator Sami Hamdi.
