❗️UN: Sixth staff member detained in Sanaa in recent days
A UN staff member has been detained in Yemen, raising the total number of UN employees arrested in recent days to six, a UN spokesperson announced today.
According to Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, the latest detention occurred after Yemeni security forces entered several UN offices in Sanaa on Sunday. He added that they seized IT and communications equipment, as well as other assets.
Dujarric said at least 59 UN personnel are currently being held by Ansarallah, condemning the ongoing detentions. Some of those detained have been held for years, the UN noted.
Deputy spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General Farhan Haq said, “Our immediate priority is the safety and well-being of all UN personnel, including securing the release of colleagues who have been arbitrarily detained and those of our local partners who have also been affected, and prevent further detentions.”
